Acoustic neuroma, also known as vestibular schwannoma, is a nonmalignant tumor of the 8th cranial nerve. Acoustic neuroma has a close proximity with the brain stem, cerebellum and cranial nerves. It can result in tinnitus, vertigo and hearing loss because of strain on the 8th cranial nerve in the early stage. Larger acoustic neuroma can press on nearby cranial nerves that control the muscles of facial expression and sensation. Also large acoustic neuroma can lead to balance disturbances. If acoustic neuroma become too large, they can press on the brain stem or cerebellum, which could be deadly. |
